| Artist captures feelings, dreams of the old, new Comiskey parks By Rebecca Carr Daily Herald Staff Writer June 17, 1991 Standing at the entrance of the new Comiskey Park, Carlo Beninati could see a scoreboard poking out of the rubble of the old ball diamond. As the sun set, people milled around him. He didn't notice. The Arlington Heights artist understood for the first time why some people cherish ballparks as much as they do churches. "It was really eerie, the old ballpark was dying and right across the street, all the lights were turned on," Beninati said. "I had this mystic feeling of the new park connecting with the old." Today, Beninati will unveil a painting that merges the old Chicago White Sox Park with the new. Called "The Dream Fulfilled," Beninati painted old baseball heroes - such as Shoeless Joe Jackson, Nellie Fox and Luke Appling - hovering above a nighttime game at the new field. The painting was commissioned by the Chicagoland Chrysler-Plymouth Dealers as a tribute to the old ballpark and to begin a legend at the new park. It will hang in the Comiskey Park Hall of Fame on loan, and posters of the painting will be passed out to 15,000 White Sox fans later this month, Chicago Baseball Charities will receive a limited edition framed proof for their cancer care wings at Northwestern Hospital and Children's Memorial Hospital. The list of famous sports players painted by Beninati includes Joe Montana, Joe DiMaggio, Vince Lombardi and Rocky Marciano. Chicago Bears coach Mike Ditka commissioned Beninati to do his portrait, and Beninati painted Chicago Bears running back Walter Payton when he retired. While Beninati has worked on portraits of Fortune 500 executives and celebrities, there is something about the Comiskey Park piece that sticks with him still. "To paint the way something looks is one thing, but to paint the feeling is entirely another," he said. |
